Pakistan to strengthen intelligence agencies network, says PM

Islamabad, June 19, IRNA - Dubbing recent wave of killings as terror acts, Pakistan on Saturday decided to strengthen its network of intelligence agencies to effectively combat the menace. "I chaired a meeting on law and order and we felt that the working agencies like CID and Special Branch be made more effective," Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali told journalists here at the Parliament House. A well-conceived monitoring by the agencies, he was of the view, was vital to preempt any untoward incident. To a question, he said that military courts were not being established. However, he added that the anti-terrorist courts would be made more effective. Jamali also said that the federating units had been directed to present their list of demands by July 1 so that increased allocations could be incorporated in the budget. It was decided that Punjab, which had better security system, would spare security personnel for Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP), Sindh and Balochistan and impart training to their law-enforcement agencies, he added. In response to a question, he said that he was kept abreast of the ongoing operation in tribal areas. He said the strategy to ensure safety to the tri-border junction oining Balochistan, NWFP and Punjab) would be revamped shortly. There have been attacks on the gas pipelines at the junction in a year or so. About changes in Hadood Ordinance, Prime Minister Jamali said that no law would be made repugnant to the Holy Quran and Sunnah. TSH/1430/1412
