417th Signal Battalion (Composite)

The mission of the 417th Signal Battalion (Composite) is to provide command and control and supervision for assigned and attached units of the Signal Battalion(Composite) or (DOIM); to implement plans, policies, & procedures of the Theater Signal Command(Army); provide staff management for the installation, operation & maintenance of the communication & automation systems in support of Theater/Joint/Coalition level functions as directed.

The unit is also tasked with providing for execution of communications & automation support as required for combat, Operations Other Than War, Joint Task Force, Combined/Coalition, and ARFOR operations; and with providing communications and automation support for Military Support to Civilian Authorities during disaster relief or civil disturbance operations.

Coordinating a Signal exercise can be difficult. When placed under the control of a different unit, the challenges can become tremendous. Company B, 63rd Signal Battalion, 93rd Signal Brigade, got a chance to find out what it would be like during Grecian Firebolt '01, when they were placed under the operational control of the 417th Signal Battalion, a Florida Army National Guard unit. The battalion also controlled elements of the 290th Joint Communications Support Squadron, a Florida Air National Guard unit, and its own 653rd Signal Company. The company operated a switch and line of site relay that handled signals from troposphere scatter and tactical satellite elements controlled by the 417th.
