Inshore Boat Unit Eleven
IBU 11
IBU 11 is a commissioned Naval Reserve unit homeported at Naval Station Everett, WA. It has a complement of two officers, 34 sailors, and two IBU patrol craft assigned.
The mission of IBU 11 is to provide trained forces for, and conduct inshore boat operations in support of, expeditionary operations by U.S. Naval forces in littoral regions worldwide. In layman's terms, IBU craft operate world-wide in and around inlets, channels, river deltas, harbors or any other chokepoint coastal region that can be considered threatened by hostile surface & subsurface enemy. Primarily, the IBU craft are designed operate in the outer area of these waterways.
The Immediate Supervisor in Charge (ISIC) for IBU-11 is Commander, Naval Coastal Warfare Group ONE (CNCWG-1) in Imperial Beach, CA.
Constant Field Training at places like Crane Point at Naval Magazine Indian Island during drill weekends helps maintain IBU-11's edge. Transporting the boats overland, camp set up, boat launching and recovery, drills at sea and on land, and other exercises are all part of keeping skills fresh in case the unit is recalled.
In September 1997 IBU-11 was commissioned at Naval Station Everett, WA. In July 1997 the unit participated in IBU mini-camp at Annapolis, MD.
In July 1998, it participated in CART Review at Naval Station Sandpoint at Lake Washington, WA. In August IBU 11 participated in Exercise Seahawk at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA.
In July 1999 it conducted IBU mini-camp at Naval Station San Diego, CA. and in September the unit participated in Exercise Crocodile at Gladstone, Australia.
In April 2000 the crew served weapons gunshoot at Yakima Army Reserve Center, WA. In August 2000 the IBU participated in Exercise Seahawk at Naval Magazine Indian Island, WA. Additionally, in August IBU 11 provided force protection for the USS Alabama during Seafair at Seattle, WA.
In April 2001 the unit provided inshore force protection training to the Bahraini Navy at Naval Support Activity (NSA), Manama, Bahrain in support of Exercise Neon Falcon.
From May 2001 to June 2001 the unit provided force protection training to the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) at San Diego, CA.
In June 2001, twelve reservists from IBU-11 were recalled to active and deployed to Bahrain in the Middle East. Their mission was to provide force protection in conjunction with IBU-13.
As a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington DC on September 11, 2001, the Naval Reserve unit Inshore Boat Unit Eleven was called up into active service with the US Navy on September 27, 2001. Supporting Operation Noble Eagle, the unit provided waterborne security for the naval assets.
From October 7, 2001 to October 22, 2001 IBU-11 tasked to provide security for the USS Valley Forge's visit to Long Beach, CA. This event represented the first U.S. Navy port call in the United States since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and was to support the 2001 Annual Naval Congress, an assembly of current and retired Naval members and advocates. Tensions were high but IBU-11 personnel showed their professionalism and proved that they could get the job done.
Furthermore from October 2001 to December 2001 selected unit members were diverted to Alexandria, Egypt to support Exercise Bright Star and provided force protection patrols during Maritime Prepositioned Forces (MPF) operations.
From October 30, 2001 to April 26, 2002 IBU-11 was stationed in Naval Station San Diego. Augmenting the Naval Boat Police, IBU-11 performed its duties in a professional and effective manner.
