IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Aug 3, IRNA -- The Pakistani military said on Tuesday that its security forces, during recent operations in the country`s tribal area, not only flushed out foreign militants but also gained control of the area and, in the process, have seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition. "These operations have eliminated the main strongholds of miscreants in South Waziristan and have also facilitated political work, which has resulted in the surrender of several wanted men," a military statement said. It said so far the security forces have cleared the Shakai area and its adjacent valleys, including Khamrang Santoi and Mantoi, with the active cooperation of the local tribesmen. "The arms captured by the security forces include cannons, mortars, rocket launchers, grenades, and recoilless rifles, fuses, anti-tank and anti-personnel mines as well as a huge quantity of ammunition, explosives with electrically improved circuits, communication gadgetries, medicines and food items." According to the statement, the same kind of weapons and ammunition were used in various attacks elsewhere in the country. Pakistan says around 600 foreign militants are hiding in the tribal area close to Afghanistan. They fled the war in Afghanistan and had taken shelter in Pakistan`s semi-autonomous region. Pakistani forces are engaged in an operation to capture foreign militants in South Waziristan. TK/TSH/2321/1432
