Thales UK to supply infra red search & track for tranche 2 Typhoon aircraft
17 July 2006
And Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) sensors for the second tranche of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft for the UK, Spain and Italy.
Thales, in addition to acting as the technical and design authority, will also provide the complex Optical and Data Processing sub systems for this cutting edge Electro Optical sensor from its Optronics facilities in Glasgow and Staines.
PIRATE gives a passive IRST capability to the Typhoon weapon system for the detection and tracking of air and surface targets as well as providing FLIR imagery for low level flight and navigation during all weather, day or night operations. The PIRATE hardware is housed in a compact single line replaceable unit containing the optical system and signal processing assemblies. This state of the art system gives Eurofighter Typhoon unrivalled IRST capabilities.
PIRATE complements the aircraft's active sensors and data link systems providing greatly enhanced and vital battlespace situational awareness for the Typhoon crew.
Karen Oddey, Managing Director of Thales UK's land and joint systems business said, "This order underpins the importance of Thales' UK Optronics capability, building on the success of the tranche 1 contract for which delivery is now well underway. The PIRATE system makes a significant contribution to the overall effectiveness of the Eurofighter Typhoon's combat system "
The EuroFirst consortium signed the Series Production contract with EADS in December 2003 for the initial supply of 116 systems for the tranche 1 aircraft.
