NAVAL BASE CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- Naval Base Coronado (NBC) stood up an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Oct. 22 in response to the San Diego wild fires.

The EOC centralizes major department heads from NBC's tenant commands to support evacuee operations, provide a host base for aircraft assisting with the fires and complete routine base operations.

"We are taking a significant load off the civilian community by helping with the relief efforts," said Capt. Anthony Gaiani, NBC's commanding officer. "When under duress, people show their true colors, and we have had many Sailors and Marines volunteer their time."

Department heads from security, air operations, public affairs, medical, public works, command staff, judge advocate general, logistics, NBC's commanding officer and executive officer work to support the regional operation center with updates.

"It's truly been a humbling experience to see the kind of people we have in the Navy," said Gaiani. "The support we are getting from the tenant commands, ships and civilians is overwhelming."

NBC's EOC is managing five evacuee sites with about 3,000 people.

"It's what we do," said Lt. Cmdr. Nick Byrd, C-12 flight operations officer, referring to the military's role in the efforts. "It's our business; we protect and serve, whether it's ashore or abroad."
