Taipei, May 27 (CNA) Taiwan's foreign ministry on Monday expressed serious concern over the intrusion of members of Japanese right-wing groups into Taiwan's territorial waters around the Diaoyutai islands, an action it described as raising tensions in the area.
In a statement, the foreign ministry said that it has noticed the intrusion and subsequent mutual warnings between Japanese and Chinese government vessels.
The action has infringed on the interests of the Republic of China in Taiwan and has a negative impact on regional stability and security by heightening tensions, it said.
The Republic of China (ROC) government expresses serious concern over the matter and called on all sides to show reason and restraint and to avoid any actions that may lead to conflicts and undermine peace and stability in East China Sea, said the ministry.
It reiterated the government's indisputable position that the Diaoyutai islands are territories of the Republic of China from historical, geographical, geological points of view as well as from the viewpoint of international law.
According to press reports, nearly 30 Japanese activists reached the waters off the Diaoyutais in four vessels in the early hours of Sunday under the escort of Japanese Coast Guard patrol boats. Three Chinese government vessels were sent to expel the Japanese and did not leave the area until five hours later, the reports said.
