President Barack Obama says the United States will do "what is necessary" to eliminate ISIL following the US-led bombing campaign against the terrorist group in Syria.

'We will not tolerate safe havens for terrorists who threaten our people,' Obama said on Tuesday.

'The strength of this coalition makes it clear to the world that this is not America's fight alone.'

The US military announced that it has conducted airstrikes against ISIL targets in eastern Syria early Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, "participated in or supported" the operation.

The airstrikes were carried out by manned Air Force and Navy aircraft. The Tomahawk missiles were also launched from American warships in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea.

Obama said his country stands shoulder to shoulder with its Arab partners in the strikes.

'We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder on behalf of our common security,' Obama said.

The US president also noted the fight against the terror network will take time, but it is vital to the security of the US and the world.

According to experts, there are questions at play about the credibility of the United Nations since President Obama and his allies conducted the bombings without UN approval.

Meanwhile, the Syrian government had earlier warned about Washington's attacks against ISIL targets inside Syria without its permission.

On Tuesday, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that Washington informed Syria's permanent envoy to the United Nations that strikes would be launched against the terrorists.

US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Washington had informed Damascus via mutual representatives at the UN.

"We warned Syria not to engage US aircraft,' Psaki said. 'We did not provide advance notification to the Syrians at a military level, or give any indication of our timing on specific targets.'
