Golden Spike

Exercise Golden Spike, scheduled at Camp Roberts, CA from July 7, 2001 through August 4, 2001, was a joint training exercise between the National Guard and the Army Reserve. It was the biggest exercise in more than twenty years. Seven thousand soldiers from the army reserves and the National Guard participated. The Primary Annual Training [AT] Period for many California National Guard units was 14-28 July 2001. AT01 is a multi-echelon, multi-component exercise that 5th US Army code named Golden Spike. The entire 40th Infantry Division participated from 21 JUL - 4 AUG. Golden Spike was an opportunity to focus on both unit and individual readiness. Primary training events were battalion tactical live fire exercises and participation in the 3rd BDE Warfighter Exercise.
