BK-1060 35mm SPAAG

China has developed a new 8x8 series wheeled armored fighting vehicle. The first model put into use by the Chinese People's Liberation Army is WZ-0001. Followed by the battlefield repair model WZ-4006, 122-mm self-propelled howitzer WZ-9003, 35mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun BK-1060 and armored command vehicle WZ-7007. The new combat vehicle has excellent tactical and technical performance and has become the main weapon of the People's Liberation Army. In the construction of the armored fighting vehicle, the traditional layout was used: the front is the tank driver and power system, and the back is the crew compartment independent of the tank's cockpit.

Due to the rapid improvement in missile performance after World War II, large-caliber antiaircraft artillery gradually withdrew from the war arena, while small-caliber antiaircraft artillery survived this knockout due to the advantages of fast firing speed and short reaction time. After the 1960s, the Soviet Union and the West verified the optimal caliber of anti-aircraft artillery, and finally determined the range of 30 to 35 mm. The Chinese Army only began to incorporate advanced small-caliber self-propelled artillery into its equipment modernization plan in the 1980s. However, because the technology of the self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system was relatively complex, and China had to start with a simple self-propelled artillery first because of its weak research and development foundation and limited military expenditure growth.

As the Chinese Army’s equipment modernization plan made positive progress in the new century, the 35mm self-propelled artillery research and development plan was put on the table again. At this time, due to the new situation of air defense operations, especially the large-scale application of electronic jamming methods, China made timely improvements to the original self-propelled artillery program, including integrating the photoelectric tracking system into the original radar system. On the one hand, it improves the ability of self-propelled artillery to engage in electromagnetic environments, and on the other hand, it also improves the ability to detect small targets such as guided bombs.

In addition to the crawler twin-barreled 35mm self-propelled artillery, wheeled 35mm self-propelled artillery was developed. Unlike the former, which uses a double-barreled 35mm gun, the latter only has a 35mm single-barreled gun in the center of the turret. This benefit is helpful to reduce the load-bearing requirements of the wheeled chassis, but it does not represent the reduction in combat power, because it uses a new revolving structure, which makes the rate of fire almost doubled to 1000 rounds per minute, in terms of firepower density Not much worse than the 09 style. However, due to the single-channel supply of ammunition, the wheeled 35mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun cannot switch the ammunition type during shooting, which is slightly inferior to the 09 type that can switch the ammunition type.

The domestically-made wheeled 35mm anti-aircraft gun is the anti-aircraft weapon of the medium-sized synthetic brigade. Anti-aircraft missiles are also integrated on the cannon, and the artillery and missile are integrated. The muzzle coil is standard for firing programmable ammunition. Army is going with 35mm AAA, but Navy will be using 30mm (ground forces using same system as the shipborne). The Desert style pattern seems to be the pattern for export products. It looks like 2 different SAMs are mounted. Some pics have a TY-90-type twin box launcher, others have a quad cylindrical tube (QW/FN series?).

Apparently it took around 10 years to reverse engineer the rearliest AAA guns. Over the years they have managed to upgrade the system, achieving better performances. Also, simple optical tracking and certain automation also allows each unit to independently engages target in the absence of skyguard radar as well as being fire remote controlled from inside truck cabin. Improvement in smart ammunition enables the unit the achieve (airburst) performance on the level of Oelikon GDF 006 (AHEAD) system. BK1060 on the other hand is a revolver cannon system similar to Rheinmetall's Skyranger 35.

In addition to the brand-new revolving structure, the wheeled 35mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun compared to the 09 type has another major attraction in the use of an unmanned turret, which makes the turret structure more compact, and the internal redundancy space has also increased a lot. This makes it possible to install anti-aircraft missiles. As for the reason why the wheeled 35mm self-propelled artillery is not installed like the Type 09, simply put, in the self-propelled artillery, the radar/photoelectric system and the fire control system always account for the majority of complexity. This makes the cost of the wheeled self-propelled artillery not much lower than the 09 type, which is obviously unacceptable for the medium-sized synthetic brigade. Of course, it is too early to say that the development of fixed-wheeled 35mm self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery has come to an end.
