Shuttle Lands in California

By VOA News
24 May 2009

The U.S. space shuttle Atlantis has landed at Edwards Air Force Base in the western state of California, after bad weather thwarted landing plans on Friday and Saturday.

Cloudy skies and rain forced NASA to abandon landing attempts at the Kennedy Space Center in the southeastern state of Florida.

NASA officials had hoped to land the shuttle in Florida to save the time and expense of transporting the orbiter back to the east coast to prepare it for its next launch.

The shuttle had enough supplies aboard to remain in orbit until Monday.

The shuttle astronauts returned to Earth Sunday after making unprecedented repairs to the 19-year-old Hubble Space Telescope.

The repairs are expected to extend the Hubble's life at least five more years.
