CHRISTOPHER: HAN SAYS CHINA SHARES U.S. CONCERNS OVER NKOREA (Excerpts: Secretary of State on March 30, 1994) (460) Washington -- Secretary of State Christopher says the United States has been working closely "with the Chinese on the text of the (UN) resolution" on North Korea "and I was encouraged to hear from (South Korean) Foreign Minister Han that his conversations in Beijing over the last few days indicated that the Chinese share the concerns the United States has about developments in North Korea."

In response to reporters just prior to his meeting with the Foreign Minister of Spain and following his meeting with South Korea's Foreign Minister Han, Christopher said, "I don't want to predict the action of any other country. They obviously will do whatever they conclude to do, but I think the fact that we are working very closely with them, that they share our interest, share our concerns about North Korea is an encouraging sign."

Following are excerpts from his Q&A with reporters prior to his meetingg with the Spanish Foreign Minister:

(begin excerpts) QUESTION: Mr. Secretary, excuse me for the diversion, but were you and the South Korean Foreign Minister able to work out a unified approach towards the Security Council resolution and towards meeting Chinese concerns?

SECRETARY CHRISTOPHER: I think we are very much in a unified position with respect to the United Nations Security Council. We are going to be urging a resolution there. One thing I would stress is that we are consulting very closely with all the parties, including the Chinese, about the best way to encourage the North Koreans to take the steps that the international community wants them to take. But our position was in very close harmony; I think our positions are completely congruent.

QUESTION: Mr. Secretary, do you have any further confidence that the Chinese won't veto a resolution after you accepted this Korean (inaudible)?

SECRETARY CHRISTOPHER: Well, I just heard the South Korean Foreign Minister say that he thought it was highly unlikely on his way out of the building. What I would say is that we have been working closely with the Chinese on the text of the resolution; and I was encouraged to hear from Foreign Minister Han that his conversations in Beijing over the last few days indicated that the Chinese share the concerns the United States has about developments in North Korea.

I don't want to predict the action of any other country. They obviously will do whatever they conclude to do, but I think the fact that we are working very closely with them, that they share our interest, share our concerns about North Korea is an encouraging sign. Thank you very much.
