Iraq: UN pledges support for Prime Minister's national reconciliation plan
26 June 2006 – The senior United Nations envoy in Iraq today pledged the world body’s support for Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki’s wide-ranging initiative to seek national reconciliation in the war-torn and faction-ridden country.
“At a time when violence and sectarian strife continue to mark the loss of life all across Iraq, it is important that the new government has chosen to widen the door for dialogue,” the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said in a statement issued in the name of Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative Ashraf Qazi.
“All parties should see this as an opportunity for a new beginning and reinvigorate the spirit of national unity to ensure wise governance in the days ahead.”
The statement said Mr. Al-Maliki’s efforts to reach out and consolidate the political process are fundamental to establishing the rule of law in Iraq.
“The peaceful path of forgiveness and healing through amnesty, release of detainees, placing respect for human rights high on the agenda of the government, emphasizing the delivery of services to a long suffering people, and resolving the problem of militias amongst other critical issues outlined in the 24-point program, are vital steps towards stabilization and normalization of the situation in the country,” it added.
“The United Nations stands by to place the necessary means and resources at its disposal, to facilitate and assist in the implementation of the issues outlined in the reconciliation project of the prime minister, in accordance with its mandate,” the statement concluded.
