Greetings to Syrian President

Pyongyang, April 16 (KCNA)--General Secretary Kim Jong Il today sent a message of greetings to Bashar al Assad, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Baath Party and President of Syria, on the occasion of the 57th anniversary of its independence.
The message extended warm congratulations to the president and, through him, to the friendly Syrian government and people on this occasion.
Since the independence the Syrian people have achieved many successes in the struggle to defend the sovereignty of the country and the nation and build prosperous Syria under the correct leadership of the party, the message said, adding:
The Korean people always extend full support to the president and the people of Syria in their just cause to achieve the progress and modernization of the country, retake the occupied Arab territories including Golan Heights and seek a fair and comprehensive solution to the Mid-East problem.
The message expressed belief that the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries would grow stronger and develop and wished the president good health and happiness.
